The North Sea cycling challenge

1 september 2017 - Uithuizermeeden, Nederland

So, it's already some days ago that I updated the blog. I had no WiFi in the house where I stayed. The days before In spend 2 Nights in the tent, which allows to have WiFi only around, either the reception or the toilet building, not the best places to get inspired.
Finally on Monday 28th when I found myself in Callantsoog already at lunchtime, I had to decide whether I should go to the island of Texel and take the risk of not being able to cross over to the island of Vlieland the next day , or bike over the Afsluitdijk again like in May,  but now with the wind in my back, and cross over directly to the island of Vlieland, which was the only Dutch island I did not yet visit.
I decided not to waste any time and go for a direct cross over to Vlieland on the 29th giving me the opportunity to enjoy the back wind on the Afsluitdijk.
Arriving at the start of the Afsluitdijk, I intended to spend the night at a campsite nearby, which according to Google was a normal camping who should accept small tents. This was not the case, and therefore had to go back a few kilometres to another camping where I spend the night with Anna who joined me after work.
Next day, I started in time in order to arrive at Harlingen for the ferry leaving at 14.20, which should not be a problem for 47 km. But that day I fell for the first time, trying to get the phone while cycling on a steep dike, it left me with a painful enkel, vinger and most of all, a feeling of being stupid.
My enkel was painful when walking, but cycling was no problem, so I continued and
I was able to catch the ferry in time anyway.
Arriving at the island, I installed myself on a camping, and specially chose a good place for my tent, as they expected a lot of rain and wind during the night and the next day.
The rain came quiet early that evening, so I went to bed early.
Next day, it was still raining and my tent was standing strong, which was not the case for my neighbours, the rain didn't stop the whole day, so finally, I broke up the tent in the rain with my rain closes on, but the jacket and trousers appeared not to be suitable for this kind of rain, so I was soaking wet after visiting the island in the afternoon by bike.
On the ferry back to the mainland I was able to dry up a bit, but when cycling to the place where I spend the night, I was soaked again.
The guy who provided the room was a retired air force general probably, he was very strict and was really commanding me on what to do and not to do. Not really the warm welcome that I hopped for, I stayed in the room that night and had some old bread for diner.
Next morning I left early again, as I was not allowed to stay after the 8.15 breakfast.
After riding 80km along dikes with sheaps everywhere, I arrived at a little house where I booked a night, nobody was home, so I first had dinner and came back, to a very friendly woman, giving me a very warm welcome and providing a bed in a special kind of cabinet in the kitchen, it is called a "bedstee" in Dutch. People used to always sleep in a bedstee in the past.
Finally, today, September 1st, short day, (my legs are a bit slow) I am staying in a village called Uithuizermeeden, I will sleep here tonight.
I already have arranged a room in a place where I stayed before a few years ago during another bike trip with Lan.
Tomorrow will be the last day of this adventure, still need to pedal for 60 km , but  that should not be a problem.
I hope you enjoyed the few posting about this trip and stay tuned for more stories starting September 9th.
f the toilet building, not the best places to get inspired.
